Tim Arel: Advantages to Townhouse Living

Tim Arel tells us that there was a time in European history when only the aristocracy could have afforded a townhouse.  It meant owning a second or third home in a city, while otherwise having an estate in the country. While the affordability of townhouses has changed significantly over the years, the architectural structure is still similar.  Townhomes were (and still are) a set of connected houses, which shared walls and were built in the same style. Today, they are not a symbol of the wealthy but are actually a more affordable residence.  Tim Arel suggests a townhouse as a practical housing alternative for people who cannot buy a freestanding home or for those who simply prefer that style of living.

There are several benefits to renting or owning townhouse.  Usually they are built in large communities and managed by a property management company or home owners association.  There is an effort on the part of their management keep such communities looking consistent, so landscaping is taken care of, as is maintenance and repair. This is often a big benefit to more senior people. They still desire the feel of a private home but no longer want the responsibility for exterior upkeep or need as much interior space. Tim Arel has known many people, who have retired, sold their houses, and happily moved in a townhouse community. Another advantage to townhouse living is a reduced heating bill.  Since only two sides of the dwelling have outdoor exposure, heating costs are usually less.  The yard size is often small yet still large enough to enjoy fresh air and have some simple furniture.  Additionally, the proximity to neighbors can provide welcome social opportunities. Many townhome developments offer a swimming pool and laundry room, while others offer amenities such a workout facility or golf course. It can be a great starter-home for a young couple or family, while they save to buy a home. With less maintenance costs and a lower rent or purchase price than a freestanding home, townhouse living can be a great real estate choice.
